2 Hour Fire-rated Fireguard®: |
|
Lightweight double wall
steel aboveground storage tank |
| |
For aboveground fuel storage, concrete
tanks are good...
and heavy! They're also expensive to transport and install
and almost impossible to move once they're in place.
Fireguard® offers the safety of UL 2085
steel
secondary containment...plus lightweight convenience.
Fireguard® features a super
lightweight insulation within the
interstice, reducing total tank weight by more than half--so
it
can be easily relocated! The porous insulation material
allows
migration of any liquid through the interstice to the
monitoring
point. Unlike plastic liners, the steel double wall design
provides
110% UL-listed secondary containment. And Fireguard®
comes delivered as a complete unit--with Steel Tank
Institute
Quality Assurance built in. Isn't this the kind of
performance
you're looking for? |

|
• Secondary containment
is testable on-site
using standard, economical testing procedures.
• Fireguard®'s steel outer wall provides
low-cost maintenance and protects the
insulation material from weathering.
• An average 12,000 gallon Fireguard® weighs
under 30,000 pounds - well within the legal
load limit for trucking.
• 30-year warranty is standard with every
Fireguard®. |
• The secondary
containment on certain designs
may require elaborate and expensive
procedures to be tested on-site.
• Exposed concrete outer wall is susceptible to
cracking, spalling and weathering - problems
that are expensive to correct and are usually not
covered by warranty.
• An average 12,000 gallon concrete-encased
tank weighs upwards of 100,000 pounds -
imagine the hassles involved in handling that
tank.
• Some manufacturers may charge extra for a
30-year warranty. |

Beware of False
Secondary Containment
UL 2085 has two listings for
thermally insulated tanks: one for single wall tanks
and one for secondary containment (double wall). The
most common fire protected tank models are not
listed for secondary containment. Although a plastic
liner may be installed between the inner steel tank
and the concrete encasement, and is perceived by
tank owners as secondary containment, according to
UL listings, the liners do not constitute secondary
containment.
The liners may provide a monitorable interstice
during normal use. During a fire, liners could leak
out through cracks in the concrete. If this were to
occur. UL testing has not determined the
consequences if the concrete insulation absorbs
gasoline during a pool fire. However, a recent pool
test conducted for Fireguard's® UL 2085 listing
examined the consequences of gasoline in the
interstice which could be absorbed by the insulation
material. Testing results proved that vapors and
flames vented out of the interstice and insulation
material as designed. The tank integrity of
Fireguard® would not be jeopardized during such a
fire.
Many concrete encapsulated tanks
using plastic liners are not UL 2085 listed for
secondary containment--their listing only addresses
the thermal insulation. Tank customers and
regulators may not be aware that many UL 2085 listed
tanks that appear to be double wall don't include
secondary containment as part of the UL listing.
Fireguard® is UL 2085 listed for secondary
containment and uses a steel outer wall for the
secondary containment.
